May 06, 2016 | “Mum, I love you!”
“Mum, how have you been these past months? Have you had enough to eat? I got my grades from school, and I got a score of 94 in Chinese, 87 in mathematics, and 72 in English.
Don’t worry mum, I know you did nothing wrong, and I am waiting for your return.”
This is a letter from a nine-year-old boy to his mother. He grew up without his parents because they were arrested when he was only three years old. He lives with his grandmother, who often tells him that his parents did not do anything wrong by upholding their belief in Falun Gong. Though still an elementary school pupil, he is mature beyond his years and feels proud of his mother.
The boy’s mother, Ms. Lin Xiumei, was arrested and detained many times for remaining steadfast in her practice of Falun Gong, despite the persecution that began in 1999. Her latest arrest was in August 2010 – she was sentenced to seven years in prison and has been held in the Harbin Women’s Prison since February 23, 2011. She has been subjected to many forms of torture, including sleep deprivation, being suspended by ropes or manacles, and being tied to a cold, steel death bed.
Ms. Lin’s mother went to visit her on April 11, 2016, but their conversation was cut off by the guards after just ten minutes. Ms. Lin’s mother brought her the boy’s letter, but the guards would not allow Ms. Lin to read it.
