Statement on CCP-Linked Threats Targeting Shen Yun, Falun Gong, and Australian National Security
(25/02/2026) We strongly condemn the Chinese Communist Party’s escalating campaign of transnational repression targeting Shen Yun Performing Arts and Falun Gong practitioners worldwide. The coordinated pattern of bomb threats, death threats, and systematic intimidation constitutes more than harassment — it reflects tactics consistent with state-sponsored intimidation designed to silence dissent beyond China’s borders.
Shen Yun Performing Arts is a New York-based classical Chinese dance and music company founded in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. Through classical Chinese dance and live orchestral performance, Shen Yun also portrays contemporary human rights abuses in China, including the persecution of Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a peaceful spiritual practice rooted in the Buddhist tradition, centered on meditation and the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Since 1999, practitioners in China have faced severe persecution by the CCP.
Over the past two years, more than 150 bomb and death threats have targeted Shen Yun performances and members of the Falun Gong community across the United States, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and other democratic societies. Some of these threats have been traced to sources in China. The scale, repetition, and global coordination of these threats raise serious concerns about foreign interference operations aimed at suppressing protected freedoms in democratic nations.
Although every threat has been treated with utmost seriousness, all have ultimately proven to be false. Not a single performance has been cancelled as a result, nor has physical harm occurred. The objective of these threats is psychological intimidation — to instill fear, pressure venues, and undermine democratic freedoms. These efforts have failed.
The situation has now escalated to a broader national security concern. Recent reports of a death threat directed at Australia’s Prime Minister highlight the dangerous trajectory of CCP-linked intimidation tactics. When threats extend to a nation’s elected leader, this is no longer solely a matter of religious freedom or artistic expression — it becomes a direct challenge to national sovereignty, democratic governance, and public safety.
Such conduct mirrors patterns of transnational repression documented globally and warrants urgent attention at the highest levels of government. Democracies cannot permit foreign authoritarian regimes to export coercion, intimidation, and fear onto their soil.
All threats have been reported to Australian national security and law enforcement authorities. We appreciate the steps taken to ensure public safety and to protect elected officials, including the Prime Minister.
We will not be intimidated. Shen Yun performances in Australia will proceed safely and successfully. Falun Gong practitioners will continue to peacefully exercise their fundamental freedoms and expose the CCP’s ongoing persecution.
We call on the Australian government to conduct a comprehensive investigation, publicly address the national security implications of these incidents, strengthen counter–foreign interference safeguards, and hold responsible actors accountable under Australian law.
Australia’s sovereignty, democratic institutions, and rule of law must be firmly defended.
